Visiting NYC with pre-teens and/or teenagers? Here are my top 5 ‘must-see’ places to help you plan your trip

by The Wannabe WAHM on July 6, 2010

My godmother will be visiting NYC in a few weeks with 3 tweens!

She asked me for a few tips on a places to visit with the girls and I thought it would be selfish of me to not share this info with you.

We are skipping the obvious destinations like the Empire State Building and Metropolitan Museum of Art, which you should definitely see if you have the time, and getting to the good stuff that pre-teens will really enjoy.

- Madame Tussaud’s Max Museum {Times Square, 42nd St. between 7th & 8th Ave.}

If your tween is a die-hard Twilight fan, they are not going to want to miss this! A wax figure of Robert Pattinson {Edward} is the latest addition to Madame Tussaud’s extensive collection of celebrities. Pattinson was actually crowned King of Kisses since his wax figure recieved the most kisses of all other wax figures by those visiting the museum.

Other wax figures on display include Leonardo DiCaprio, President Barack Obama and Miley Cyrus.

- Dylan’s Candy Bar {1011 3rd Ave., on the corner of 3rd Ave. and 60th St.}

Got a sweet tooth? Dylan’s Candy Bar is THE place to visit for candy lovers. It features over 5,000 types of candy, from imported and elegant specialty goods to fun novelty items, and a cool and wide variety of candy related gifts/souvenirs.

It’s worth a visit even if you’re not big on candy! The store’s design has earned several awards and featured in several magazines including, Vogue and Elle Magazine.

- American Eagle Outfitters {Times Square, Broadway between 46th and 47th Street}

The American Eagle Outfitters store located in Times Square offers you and your tween 15 secs of fame! Buy anything at their store, even just a pair of socks, and get your picture taken and then shown for 15 seconds on a 15,000 square foot LED display on top of the store. Imagine the thrill your tween will feel seeing their picture on an enormous billboard in the middle of Times Square!

- American Girl Place {609 5th Ave., at the corner of 49th Street}

Besides the obvious shopping that can be done at the American Girl Place, there are many other activities that you and your tween might enjoy. Have a kid-friendly brunch, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner at the American Girl Cafe or get your tweens picture taken at the American Girl Photo Studio. You even get to take home a mock American Girl magazine cover with your child’s picture.

- Staten Island Ferry {Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan}

This is one of the best kept secrets by New Yorkers. The purpose of the Staten Island Ferry is to transport Staten Islanders to and from Manhattan but this 25 minute ride also provides a majestic view of New York Harbor and a no-hassle, boat ride, for free!

You’ll see the skyscrapers and bridges of Lower Manhattan receding as you pull away and coming into focus again as you return. You’ll also have a perfect view of The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from the deck of the ferry. This is the perfect option for visitors with limited time that what to avoid long lines and expensive boat rides to see the Statue of Liberty.

Hope you enjoy your stay here in New York City!

What about the MTV store in Times Square for your “Jersey Shore” tee shirts and the like. (And don’t forget the ginormous Forever 21 that just opened up here too!)

Times Square really has a lot though. Hershey store, M&M store, Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe, the list goes on and on…

And there’s also the HBO store by Bryant Park for all your True Blood paraphanalia. But that might be for an older crowd. I don’t know what the tweens are watching these days.

It’s funny: I lived in NYC in the mid-90s, WAY before kids. It’d be so different to visit there now WITH kids. But I’m going to BlogHer solo, so I get to visit my favorite haunts – altho that candy bar? I might just have to make a stop in there!
